I just read an article that said that Michigan has some of the fewest births per 1000 women, in the country. I can only speculate as to why this is, but it sort of strikes me as sad, our state could be thriving, but really isn’t.
Just seven years ago I personally couldn’t wait to get OUT of Michigan, my family has very deep roots here, and hardly ever think of leaving (if ever really). I was the first in my family to travel across the ocean, and one of the first to move out of state in three generations, perhaps more. So what brought me back? Utimately family did. My husband and I wanted to grow our own family in a way that would be beneficial to our children… i.e. having grandparents, aunt’s, uncles, and cousins around them as they grew… something we never had before, simply because we were a military family and moved where the job called us. But now we are back in Michigan, and I know of three women who have just had babies, and four who are now pregnant, but still it seems birth isn’t high on the priority list for many women. Most women I know are completely happy with having two babies and will not even consider having a third, it is interesting for me to see this happening. I’m not sure that any two families share the same reasons for not having more babies, but they have choosen to stop after two.
It seems to me that with all the resources Michigan has to offer we could really sprout our families like wild flowers! We have land, most of it fertile. Most families strive to have their own large plot of land, or at least a big back yard, and this provides ample space to grow our own food… which could cut down our living costs even with a large family… and yet we don’t.
I’m not even sure if I have a point here, it just seems to me our state could stand to have a lot more babies than it has… and that wouldn’t hurt business at all for me.. so maybe this post is pure selfishness, but GET OUT THERE AND HAVE MORE BABIES LADIES! And have fun doing it *wink wink
