When a woman consults me to accompany her through labor the conversation will sometimes lead to the wonderful gift of oxytocin that God has given us to forget the pain in the moment that our babies are born.  Today I was reading my bible and came across this verse that so accurately says it.  John 16:21 when a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come.  But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.

During my third child’s birth I had my friend reading psalms to me, I will never forget the moment she started reading psalm 23:4 yay, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death… Never in my life had I related to that verse so well! I don’t look back and think I was in that valley, and I never saw childbirth as a journey so close to death before that moment or after it, but man was I feeling that way in the moment.  My hour had come.

Now though just as God promised, the joy of bringing my baby into the world and that gift of chemicals my brain is geared to release to bond me to my baby, have made me forget the painful journey of his exit from my womb.

Birth is a journey,  are you ready for all it has to offer you?  I would love to help you prepare!
